My grandfather Elmer Jim Taylor enlisted in the United States Army April 20, 1917 in Souix City, Iowa. Elmer departed on June 15, 1917 for France. Elmer was in the 1st Expeditionary Division, 16th Infantry, Company G. In the month of May 1918 he fought in the Cantigny and Soissons battles in France. Elmer arrived back in States on December 22, 1918. The wounds he suffered during the war were shellshock and being gassed. Corporal Elmer J. Taylor was honorably discharged from service on January 27, 1919 in Camp Dodge, Iowa. The above photo of Elmer was taken in France at the close of World War I.
